How to Print Digital Art

Last updated October 16, 2026

Bought a digital art download and want it on your wall? Printing digital art is easy once you know a few basics. This guide walks you through choosing the right file, the right paper and the best way to print, whether at home or with a print shop.

1. Pick the right file and size

Every Alien Alphabet download is a high-resolution file prepared at 300 DPI, the standard for sharp prints. Match the file's shape to your frame:

  • 16:9 — wide, panoramic frames and over-the-couch spaces.
  • 3:2 — classic photo sizes like 4×6, 8×12 and 12×18 inches.
  • 4:5 — 8×10 and 16×20 inch frames.
  • 1:1 — square frames such as 12×12 inches.

If the shape doesn't match your frame, the print shop or your printer will crop or add a border. Choose "fit" to keep the whole picture.

2. Choose your paper

  • Matte paper — no glare, rich deep blacks. Great for dark space art.
  • Luster or satin — a soft sheen that makes glowing colors pop.
  • Glossy — the most vivid, but reflects light behind glass.
  • Heavy cardstock (200 gsm or more) — feels sturdy and lies flat in a frame.

3. Printing at home

  • Use an inkjet photo printer for the best color.
  • In the print settings, pick the paper type you loaded and the highest quality setting.
  • Turn off "scale to fit" if you want an exact size, or turn it on to fill the page.
  • Print a small test first to check colors before using your best paper.

4. Using a print shop or online print service

No printer? No problem. Most pharmacies, office stores and online photo-print services can print digital art from your file. Upload the file, choose your size and paper, and pick it up or have it mailed to your door. Online services that deliver are the easiest option if you'd rather stay home.

5. Why prints can look different from your screen

Screens glow, while paper reflects light, so prints usually look a little darker. If your print looks too dark, try a brighter paper like luster, or ask the print shop to brighten it slightly.

6. Frame and display

  • A black or dark wood frame makes glowing art stand out.
  • A white mat around the art gives it a gallery look.
  • Hang it away from direct sunlight to keep colors fresh.
